ISRO Achieves Significant Milestone In Semi-Cryo Engine Development

ISRO conducts successful ignition test On Semi-Cryogenic Pre-Burner Ignition Test Article (PITA)

ISRO is developing a 2000 kN thrust semi-cryogenic engine working on an LOX Kerosene propellant combination for enhancing the payload capability of LVM-3 and for future launch vehicles. Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) is the lead centre for the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems with the support of other launch vehicle centres of ISRO. The assembly and testing of the propulsion modules were done at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC-IPRC), Mahendragiri. As part of the engine development, a pre-burner ignition test article, which is a full complement of the engine power head system excluding the turbopumps is realized.

The first ignition trial was conducted successfully on May 2, 2024, at semi cryo integrated engine test facility (SIET) at IPRC, Mahendragiri, which was dedicated to the nation recently by the honourable Prime Minister of India. Smooth and sustained ignition of the pre-burner is demonstrated which is vital for the starting of the semi-cryogenic engine.

Semi-cryogenic engine ignition is achieved using a start fuel ampule which uses a combination of Triethyle Alumnide and Triethyle Boron developed by VSSC and used for the first time in ISRO in the 2000kN semi-cryogenic engine. Many injector elemental level ignition tests were conducted at the Propulsion Research Laboratory Division (PRLD) facility of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) for characterization. The ignition process is one of the most critical parts in the development of liquid rocket engine systems. With the successful ignition of the semi-cryo pre burner, a major milestone in the semi-cryo engine development has been achieved. This will be followed by development tests on the engine powerhead test article and fully integrated engine. The development of a semi-cryo stage with 120 tons of propellant loading is also under progress.

The successful ignition of a semi-cryo pre-burner is a major accomplishment of ISRO in the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems.

Indian Army, IAF To Jointly Deploy Predator Drones In Gorakhpur, Sarsawa Air Bases

New Delhi: The Indian Army and the Air Force are planning to jointly deploy MQ-9B Predator drones at air bases in Sarsawa and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, for upgrading their surveillance capabilities all along the Line of Actual Control with China from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.

The drone deal, expected to be worth around USD 4 billion is being done at tri services level with the Indian Navy leading the negotiations for it with the American side.

"The MQ-9B drones require a significant runway length for take off and landing which are available with the Indian Air Force. That is why, the Army drones are planned to be deployed with the IAF at airbases in Sarsawa and Gorakhpur," defence officials told ANI.

As per of the drone deal with the US, 31 MQ-9B drones are being acquired of which 15 would be for coverage of the maritime zone and would be deployed by the Indian Navy.

The IAF and the Army will have eight each of these highly capable long endurance drones and would be able to cover almost all the areas of interest along the LAC with support from other existing assets, the officials said.

The American side has given its letter of acceptance to the Indian side at a price tag of around USD 4 billion.

The American side is also looking at indigenisation of the parts and weapons to be used by the drones.

There is also a provision of transfer of technology of some equipment to Indian entities under the agreement, they said.

With a flight time of over 36 hours at heights over 40,000 feet, the drones can be armed with Hellfire air-to-ground missiles and smart bombs, this fighter-sized drone specializes in (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) missions.

The Predator drones are expected to significantly enhance India's ability to conduct unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance patrols, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and along its land borders with China and Pakistan.

MQ-9B has proven to be a critical asset in safeguarding India's security interests as it was used to extensively to monitor anti-piracy operations from naval headquarters to get a clear picture of the actions taking place almost 3,000 km from Indian shores.

Poonch Terror Attack: 'Pre-Planned, Stuntbaazi', Alleges Congress' Charanjit Singh Channi

Jalandhar: Former Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi alleged that the Poonch terror attack was "pre-planned" and said such "Stuntbaazi" is done to make the BJP win the elections.

"This is Stuntbaazi. And not the (terror) attacks. When elections come, such stunts are done to make the BJP win. These are pre-planned attacks, there is no truth in them...,"alleged the Congress leader.

"To kill people and to play with their bodies....BJP knows it...," he alleged.

An Indian Air Force (IAF) soldier was killed and four others were injured in the terror attack in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile the Indian Air Force on Sunday mourned Corporal Vikky Pahade, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack on Saturday evening.

"The CAS Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and all personnel of (the) Indian Air Force salute the braveheart Corporal Vikky Pahade, who made the supreme sacrifice in (the) Poonch Sector, in the service of the nation. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. We stand firmly by your side in this hour of grief," read a post on the official X handle of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Security has been heightened in the Poonch district following the attack in which four others were also injured. Security forces are carrying out regular checks of the vehicles passing by in the area.

The attack came ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the Anantnag-Rajouri seat for the 2024 general elections.

The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being held in five phases from April 19 to May 20.

Notably, opposition in 2019 alleged that BJP had "used" the 2019 Pulwama terror attack in which 40 personnel of CRPF were killed by terrorist. They further alleged that the consequent air strike at Balakot in the neighbouring country was done by BJP to win the Lok Sabha polls that year.

Navy Performed 'Miracle': Defence Minister On Its Operations To Assist Merchant Ships In Strategic Sea Lanes

The Indian Navy has performed a "miracle" (Karishma), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said, heaping wholehearted praise for the force's numerous operations in foreign waters where it assisted several merchant ships commandeered or threatened by pirates. In an exclusive interview to PTI, Singh also dropped hints of the government's readiness to positively consider the Navy's proposal for construction of a second aircraft carrier.

The Navy has been making a strong pitch for having the second indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-II) with a displacement of 45,000 tons which is estimated to cost close to ₹40,000 crore with the envisaged specifications.

Exuding confidence of the National Democratic Alliance retaining power for a third straight term, he said the new government's focus would be to make India totally self-reliant in the defence sector.

Singh said India's annual defence exports crossed ₹21,000 crore mark for the first time in 2023-24 and that his ministry has set a target of increasing it to ₹50,000 crore in the next five-six years.

"We will take it to more than ₹50,000 crore by 2029-30," he said.

On Navy operations in the strategic waterways, Singh said the force deserves praise.

"The India Navy has done miracle. Congratulations to the Navy. (Indian Navy ne Karishma kiya. Nav ko Badhai)," he said.

In the last few months, the Indian Navy extended assistance to a number of merchant vessels in the Western Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and strategic waterways around the Red Sea following attacks on them.

Late last month, the Indian Navy swiftly assisted a Panama-flagged crude oil tanker with 30 crew members, including 22 Indians, after the vessel came under missile attack from Houthi militants.

There have been growing global concerns over attacks on various commercial vessels in the Red Sea by the Houthi militants.

The Navy has foiled attacks by pirates on several ships in the region since January.

Asked about the Navy's push for a second indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC), Singh indicated that it is being favourably considered.

India's first indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant (IAC I) was commissioned in September last year.

Built at a cost of around ₹23,000 crore, INS Vikrant has a sophisticated air defence network and anti-ship missile systems.

It has the capacity to hold 30 fighter jets and helicopters.

The Navy has been pitching for three aircraft carriers to deal with China's growing naval prowess and its growing influence over the Indian Ocean region.

At present, India has two aircraft carriers - INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant.

No Need To Capture PoK By Force; Its People Will Themselves Want To Join India, Defence Minister Feels

India will never give up its claim on Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK) but it won't have to capture it with force because its people, on their own, would want to be part of India after seeing the development in Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said. In an exclusive interview to PTI, Singh asserted that the ground situation has improved significantly in Jammu and Kashmir and that a time will come when AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) will no longer be required in the Union Territory.

The defence minister, however, said the matter is under the domain of the Union Home Ministry and it will take appropriate decisions. He said elections will also be held there definitely, but wouldn't give a timeline.

"I think India will not have to do anything. The way the ground situation has changed in Jammu and Kashmir, the way the region is witnessing economic progress and the way peace has returned there, I think demands will emerge from people of PoK that they should merge with India," he said.

"We will not have to use force to take PoK as people would say that we must be merged with India. Such demands are now coming," he said. The defence minister asserted that "PoK was, is, and will remain ours".

Citing improvement in the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Singh said assembly elections will be held there soon, but did not give a timeline.

"The way the situation is improving in Jammu and Kashmir, I think a time will come when AFSPA will no longer be required there. It is my view and it is for the Home Ministry to decide on it," he said.

The AFSPA empowers security forces to conduct operations and arrest anyone without any prior warrant. It also gives immunity to the forces if they shoot someone dead.

The defence minister, referring to Pakistan's proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir, said Islamabad must stop cross border terrorism. "They are trying to destabilise India and we will not allow it to happen," he said.

The ties between India and Pakistan came under severe strain after India's warplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Balakot in Pakistan in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack.

The relations further deteriorated after India on August 5, 2019 announced the withdrawal of special powers of Jammu and Kashmir and the bifurcation of the state into two union territories.

India has been maintaining that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan while insisting that the onus is on Islamabad to create an environment free of terror and hostility for such an engagement.

Indian Envoy Gopal Bagley Calls On Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong

Canberra: Indian High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay on Monday called on the Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong and discussed a wide range of bilateral cooperation between India and Australia.

The Indian High Commission in Australia shared details of their meeting saying, "High Commissioner was honoured to call on Foreign Minister @SenatorWong Cordial and Substantive conversation on the entire range of matters in bilateral cooperation between India and Australia. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is set to touch new heights."

On May 4, India and Australia held discussions under the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) negotiations between the two countries to review the progress made after nine rounds and the way forward for its completion to reach a balanced outcome.

Australia is an important trading partner of India in the Oceania region with merchandise trade between India and Australia reaching around 24 billion USD in 2023-24, signalling significant potential for further growth.

Earlier, the Australian High Commissioner to India, Philip Green said that he is looking forward to having more Indian students coming to Australia next year for their education.

The High Commissioner said that it is wrong to say that there's been a surge in visa rejections of Indian students by Australian universities as reported by some media recently, and that they are giving a rethink to their higher education plans.

He stressed the fact that the statistics have been seen by himself, and underlined that 'they are very similar this year to what they were last year' and that 'there hasn't been a surge in rejection of students.

''There has not been a surge in rejection of students. I have looked at these statistics myself and they are very similar to this year to what they were last year. Unlike some other countries, Australia has not put a cap on the number of foreign students coming to our country. Yes, we want to make sure that students coming forward from reputable institutions will have a good experience in Australia,' said Envoy Green during an interview with ANI.

"We make apologies for the fact that we want good students and we want to make sure that they are paired with the right courses. This is utterly wrong to say that there has been a surge in rejections; we look forward to as many or perhaps even more Indian students coming to Australia in the next year," he added.

Lauding the cooperation between India and Australia in the field of Education and skill development, the High Commissioner hailed the Australian university's foreign branch opening in India which marked the first time a foreign university opened its campus in India.

IMF Mission To Visit Pakistan Again This Month For New Loan Program

Islamabad: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission is set to visit Pakistan this month regarding a new loan program and to discuss policies and reforms, reported Samaa TV.

Along with discussions on policies and reforms, the federal budget for the new financial year will also be discussed.

The visit coincides with the financial eagles of the country starting preparations to formulate the upcoming fiscal year's budget.

The IMF is pushing for the acceleration of reforms rather than the size of the program, reported Samaa TV, citing sources.

Last month, Pakistan successfully completed a USD 3 billion short-term program that saved it from defaulting.

Now, the government is pushing for a new long-term loan program, according to Samaa TV.

However, the IMF has not specified the date and duration of the visit yet.

Meanwhile, some days ago, the federal government decided to stop providing subsidies to government officials ahead of the IMF mission's visit on a new loan package.

According to media reports, the subsidy given to Customs officers from grades 17 to 22 has also been abolished.

They added that the subsidized house rent and medical charges to customs officers have been abolished, Samaa TV reported.

According to sources, the customs officers were being given these incentives from the common pool fund, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had ordered to end subsidies and incentives from the common pool fund.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) received USD 1.1 billion from the IMF on April 30.

Moreover, the IMF Executive Board completed the second review under the stand-by arrangement in its meeting on April 29 and approved the disbursement for Pakistan.

Accordingly, SBP received SDR 828 million in its account from the IMF. The amount was reflected in SBP's foreign exchange reserves for the week ending on May 3.

Russia Announces Nuclear Weapon Drills After Angry Exchange With Senior Western Officials

Russia plans to hold drills simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons, the Defence Ministry announced Monday, days after the Kremlin reacted angrily to comments by senior Western officials about the war in Ukraine.

The drills are in response to “provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

It was the first time that Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, though its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises. Tactical nuclear weapons have a lower yield compared to massive warheads that arm intercontinental ballistic missiles intended to obliterate entire cities.

The announcement appeared to be a warning to Ukraine’s Western allies about becoming more deeply involved in the more than two-year war. Some of Ukraine’s Western partners have previously expressed concern about stoking the war amid fears it could spill beyond Ukraine and into a conflict between NATO and Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron repeated last week that he doesn’t exclude sending troops to Ukraine, and U.K. Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Kyiv’s forces will be able to use British long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

The Kremlin branded those comments as dangerous, heightening tension between Russia and NATO. The war already has placed significant strain on relations between Moscow and the West.

It wasn’t the first time Europe’s military support for Ukraine has irked Russian authorities and prompted nuclear sabre-rattling. In March last year, after the U.K. government’s decision to provide Ukraine with armour-piercing shells containing depleted uranium, Putin announced that he intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.

Tactical nuclear weapons include air bombs, warheads for short-range missiles and artillery munitions and are meant for use on the battlefield.

The ministry said the exercise is intended to “increase the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to fulfill combat tasks” and will be held on President Vladimir Putin’s orders. The maneuvers will involve missile units of the Southern Military District along with the air force and the navy, it said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones hit two vehicles Monday in Russia’s Belgorod region, killing six people and injuring 35 others, including two children, local authorities said, in an area frequently struck by Kyiv’s forces in recent months.

One of the vehicles was a minibus that was carrying farm workers, Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

No other details were immediately available, and it was not possible to independently confirm the report from the border region.

While Ukraine’s army is largely pinned down on the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line due to a shortage of troops and ammunition after more than two years of fighting, it has used its long-range firepower to hit targets deep inside Russia. The apparent aim is to disrupt Russia’s war logistics system by hitting oil refineries and depots, and unnerve the Russian border regions.

The Belgorod region was a staging ground for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It has come under regular attack ever since Russian forces retreated there from northeastern Ukraine early in the war following a counteroffensive by Kyiv.

In what has largely been a war of attrition, Russia has also relied heavily on long-range missile, artillery and drones to wreak damage on Ukraine.

At the end of last year, Belgorod officials said 25 people were killed, including five children, and more than 100 were injured in a Ukrainian attack, and regular rocket and drone strikes have continued since then. The area can be reached by relatively simple and mobile weapons such as multiple rocket launchers from forests on the Ukrainian side.

Russian authorities said in March they planned to evacuate about 9,000 children from the area because of continuous shelling, after Putin said he wanted to create a buffer zone to help protect border regions.

Also, the Kremlin's forces kept up their bombardment of Ukraine's power grid, with a nighttime Russian drone attack targeting energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s northern region of Sumy. Multiple towns and villages in the region, including Sumy, lost power, regional authorities said.

Russia attacked Ukrainian targets with 13 Shahed drones overnight, 12 of which were intercepted in the Sumy region, Ukraine’s air force said.

Baloch Activist Raises Concerns Over Chinese Intervention In Balochistan

Paris: In the wake of the growing intervention of Chinese authorities in Balochistan, the President of the Baloch Voice Association (BVA), Munir Mengal on Monday held a meeting with the French Senator Herve Reynaud, BVA said in an official statement.

During the meeting, both dignitaries discussed a comprehensive dossier highlighting the deep concerns of the Baloch people regarding Chinese involvement and projects in Balochistan.

The meeting was organized amid the ongoing visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Europe. Mengal highlighted significant issues of the Baloch people regarding Chinese initiatives within Balochistan which are not agreed upon by the local population.

"Balochistan, currently under occupation by Pakistan, has faced challenges stemming from the implementation of various projects and agreements that adversely affect the Baloch people and their rights", Mengal said.

The president of BVA also implied that Pakistan as a forceful occupier lacks the legitimate authority to enter into agreements or grant concessions over Balochistan's territory or resources. The agreements made by Pakistan with foreign entities, including those involving China, do not represent the will or consent of the Baloch people.

Mengal further in his statement stated that greater scrutiny and accountability is needed in ventures related to Chinese involvement in Balochistan. Additionally, Mengal expressed the urgent necessity for international attention and action on the plight of the Baloch people.

Further, Senator Reynaud acknowledged the gravity of the concerns raised by the Baloch activist and assured him of his commitment to advocate for a deeper examination of these issues within the French legislative framework.

Mengal regularly raises his voice over the international platform demanding the address of the growing issue of enforced disappearances in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan in the previous session of UNHRC.

In his intervention, Munir Mengal, President of the Baloch Voice Association brought to the attention of the Council a grave humanitarian crisis that has been unfolding in the region of Balochistan, where the fundamental rights and freedoms of its people are being "systematically violated by the government of Pakistan". He particularly drew attention to the alarming issue of enforced disappearances in Balochistan.

Munir said, "Enforced disappearances are a deeply concerning and inhumane practice that has been ongoing in Balochistan for far too long. Thousands of innocent people have vanished without a trace, their whereabouts unknown, and their families left in anguish and uncertainty. This issue not only violates the most basic human rights but also undermines the principles of justice and accountability that the United Nations stands for".

Afghan Migrants Deported From Pakistan Say They Were Mistreated By Iran, Pak Authorities

Kabul: Criticising the mistreatment by the authorities in Pakistan and Iran, the Afghan migrants who have been forcibly deported from the nations have called for international attention to their plight there, according to TOLOnews.

The returnees, who have come from Iran, said that they were beaten by the Iranian government forces there. Whereas, those in Pakistan expressed concern about the increasing challenges they face in that nation.

Basir, an Afghan returnee, who spent nearly two years in Iran and was recently deported with his three children, said: "When they wanted to search us, I resisted and they beat me. Now, I don't know if my ribs are broken or what has happened to me, I can't even lift two kilograms," reported TOLOnews.

Whereas, Salahuddin, another deportee from Iran, said: "We went to Iran out of necessity to provide for our children, and they made it very hard for us."

On the other hand, lamenting about the situation, Reza Sazesh, an Afghan migrant in Pakistan, said: "Even those who had cards were deported from Quetta and Islamabad, Pakistan, and we are worried about this process."

However, the Taliban's consul in Karachi, Pakistan, urged the country's authorities to provide Afghan migrants with additional time to return.

According to the Taliban's Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, around 2,800 Afghan migrants returned from Iran, both voluntarily and forcibly, on May 1, according to TOLOnews.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has characterised the state of human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls as well as religious and ethnic minorities in Afghanistan, as grave, citing the urgent need for humanitarian aid for 23.7 million people to survive.

According to the report, Iran and Pakistan host around 7.7 million Afghan citizens, approximately 1.6 million of whom have been deported to Afghanistan since 2021.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International and some human rights organisations have expressed concern about the continuation of the process of expelling Afghan migrants from Pakistan and demanded a halt to this trend.
